Leadership Academy Mentor Program Mont Lawn City Camp's Leadership Academy is a youth program that provides adult mentors for at-risk youth age 13-16 in New York City. Developed in response to the challenges faced by tens of thousands of youth who live in communities where many - if not the majority of the population - live below the poverty line, where education is inferior and they are surrounded by an environment that seeks to crush their vast potential, our meet these challenges head-on through the Leadership Academy. Founded in 2005, this youth program is based foundational principles of connecting youth to God, a caring adult, a positive peer group and quality education as the means to help youth become academically accomplished, morally grounded leaders in their schools, families and communities. Learn more about of our youth programs. The Leadership Academy matches a caring adult and three to four at-risk teenagers (aged 13-16) in a transformative group mentoring relationship. For the first two years, we offer a structured program of workshops, events and team-building activities that help cultivate that relationship. Mentors commit to meeting with their proteges at least twice a month.

The latter two years comprise less structured, but more in-depth and personal programming job shadowing, college test preparation, and other activities designed to help proteges focus on developing the skills needed to be successful in college and the workplace. During the summer break Mont Lawn City Camp continues to engage proteges. Participants have the opportunity to attend Leadership Hill, our adventure-based, leadership development experience at Mont Lawn Camp, as well as Counselors in Training, which prepares a select group of youth for summer counselor positions at Mont Lawn while also developing them into mature and responsible leaders. Leadership Academy staff and mentors work together to focus “proteges” on discovering the great promise God has instilled them with; building upon positive character traits; and becoming role models in their own right in their families, schools and communities. Currently the Leadership Academy works with 80 teenagers and 25 volunteer mentors and always has room for more. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Comptroller Scott Stringer revealed the findings of his office’s audit of the city’s Department of Education and its contract with the New York City Leadership Academy. Stringer says the DOE doled out $101 million to the nonprofit academy, which coaches aspiring principals, but the academy has nothing to show for all the money spent. “Basic required record keeping was missing, and that means there’s a real risk that the deal we made improper payments,” Stringer said. The contracts required progress reports and meetings, but auditors couldn’t find sign in sheets for hours worked. Stringer says the education department pays academy coaches $183 an hour without documentation they actually worked. “When adults don’t do their job and don’t do oversight, our kids pay the price,” Stringer said. The DOE tells WCBS 880 it stopped using most of the organization’s services in June, but will review its procurement process moving forward.

The DOE said actual amount in services audited was about $560,000. Meanwhile, the New York City Leadership Academy released a statement taking issue with Stringer’s claims about its effectiveness. “We have always worked with the DOE to meet the mandates under our contract and will continue to do so to make sure the work of our coaches and other staff are accurately and appropriately supported, as the DOE confirmed was the case in its response to the Comptroller,” the academy said. “Over 14 years, the NYC Leadership Academy, a nationally recognized organization, has trained more than 550 aspiring school leaders and coached close to 2,000 principals in New York City alone.”.
