So yes, this part is mostly subjective, but in my opinion the most important source of measurement in what was played online, is to take a look at the whole Battle.net list and reflecting on it for as far as you can remember. For example, Burbenog is really high on the ENT list because it's popular of course, but it has the advantage of starting with 4 players. So each host = 4 players. But each host of Island Defense = 11 players. - You can't base a majority of statistics on an ENT list because while it is the biggest hosting group, it's not without competition. For example, ENT does not host any Vampirism maps, but many others do.

Also, ENT hosts one Risk lobby, but there are others that also do the same. Plus, ENT's been around since 2011 or 2012, not having statistics for how the older custom game scene was like. - You may ask why Lordaeron the Aftermath is low on the list. We know that it's probably been the most played strategy map for the past 3 years, but it doesn't offset the past 15 years of Warcraft 3 strategy maps. It is the only map in the top 100 to be released after 2010, however.

This is why Survival Chaos and Holy War, arguably top 100 maps today, aren't up there yet - since it was made roughly 2 or 3 years ago. - You can also factor in site activity. For example, Azeroth Wars has had a very strong following across various forums, youtube channels, and twitch streams. From what I see, only DotA and Legion TD a bigger dedicated kind of following. The difference is that AW isn't hosted nearly as much as any in the top 10. - A battle of versions. I've decided to merge versions of maps all into one, even if they're a bit stretching.

This especially applies to the Maul, Footmen, and LoaP maps. None of these maps have a definitive version, but because there were so many many versions being hosted at once 24/7, that is why they're at the top. - Using EpicWar downloads. EpicWar's top 2 maps are 'Map Tong Hop' and 'DDay' followed by a ton of DotA. MTH is not an English map.

DDay is no where to be seen online, and doesn't even have remembrance of old school BNet players. Ek Haseena Thi Serial Tone. I simply haven't seen it hosted before, or at least more than a few times. However, I can't ignore 3,723,750 downloads, therefor it's on the list. - Hive downloads are smaller in proportion, but is still the second biggest map database in terms of downloads for the English community.

However, since we're on Hive, more people would know Hive maps rather others, but I made sure not to overcompensate for our users. - Factoring by genre helps a lot. When you use EpicWar and Hive to search, it's nice to search by say, Tower Defense, to get the best order of maps by their own genre. So, I don't have some sort of magical formula to come up with the list. But it did take quite a lot more hours nerding around than I thought it would.
